+Why shouldn’t I use standard wax-treated matting agents in UV coatings?

In 100% solid UV coatings, the rapid curing process can force standard polyethylene (PE) waxes to migrate to the surface. This creates a “weak boundary layer” that destroys inter-coat adhesion (recoatability). Our GMATT UV Series uses a proprietary organic treatment that prevents hard settling without migrating, ensuring perfect adhesion between layers.

+How to prevent silica from settling in low-viscosity UV monomers?

UV formulations often have very low viscosity, making hard caking a major issue during storage. The GMATT UV Series is specially treated to provide steric hindrance, ensuring that any settled particles form a soft, easily stirrable sediment. For extreme cases, we recommend incorporating a small amount of our Hydrophobic Fumed Silica to build a weak thixotropic network.

+How does the UV Series affect the viscosity of 100% solid coatings?

Unlike high-porosity silica that drastically thickens a system, the GMATT UV Series is engineered with a controlled oil absorption (130-200 g/100g). This allows formulators to add the necessary amount of matting agent to achieve a dead-matte finish without causing unacceptable viscosity spikes in roller or spray applications.

+How much matting agent is required for a dead-matte UV finish?

In typical UV-curable wood or plastic coatings, a dosage of 5% to 10% (based on total formulation weight) is usually required to reach a dead-matte finish. Because UV systems do not shrink upon curing (no solvent evaporation), the silica particles remain fully embedded, meaning slightly higher dosages are needed compared to solvent-based systems.
