GMATT 600 Series | High-Efficiency Precipitated Silica Matting Agent
Precipitated Matting Agent

GMATT 600 Series

Advanced precipitated silica matting agents with organic wax treatment. Offers exceptional matting efficiency, robust anti-settling properties, and high oil absorption for formulation stability.

Key Features

  • Exceptional Matting Efficiency: Extremely high oil absorption (320-360 g/100g) provides powerful gloss reduction at minimal dosage levels.
  • Strong Anti-Settling: Organic wax surface treatment prevents hard caking and ensures a soft, easily re-dispersible sediment during prolonged storage.
  • Smooth Surface Finish: Tightly controlled particle size distribution guarantees a highly refined, silky touch without surface roughness.
  • Rheology Support: The high porosity structure naturally contributes to mild rheological control, helping to prevent sagging in thicker films.

Applications

  • General Industrial Finishes
  • Coil Coatings & Baking Enamels
  • Solvent-based Wood Coatings (Clear & Pigmented)
  • Leather Finishes

GMATT 600 Series: Grade Selector

Selecting the right particle size is critical for maintaining film clarity and smoothness. Match the specific grade to your target Dry Film Thickness (DFT).

GMATT P640 d50: 4.0 - 4.5 µm
Recommended DFT: < 15 µm (Thin Film)
Ultra-fine particles designed for thin-film clear coats, leather finishes, and thin plastics coatings where high transparency and a smooth feel are mandatory.
GMATT P650 d50: 6.5 - 7.0 µm
Recommended DFT: 15 - 25 µm (Medium Film)
The versatile industry standard. Excellent for general industrial finishes, coil coatings, and wood topcoats. Delivers maximum overall matting efficiency.
💡 Formulator Tip: Due to the exceptionally high oil absorption (320-360) of the GMATT 600 Series, it provides not only matting but also a slight rheology-building effect. This makes it an excellent choice for low-viscosity systems that require extra suspension support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Formulation advice and technical solutions from our R&D engineers.

How does the high oil absorption (320-360) benefit my formulation?

High oil absorption indicates a highly porous internal structure, meaning you need significantly less matting agent by weight to achieve your target gloss level. Additionally, this porosity absorbs resin and solvent, providing a mild thickening effect that helps prevent pigment settling and sagging in thicker films.

Can I use the P640/P650 grades in clear wood coatings?

Yes. The organic wax treatment in the GMATT 600 series is carefully optimized to maintain good transparency while providing essential anti-settling properties. For thin clear coats where hazing is a primary concern, we strongly recommend using the finer GMATT P640 to ensure a perfectly clear finish.

What is the main difference between P640 and P650?

The primary difference is the average particle size (d50). Use GMATT P640 (4.0-4.5 µm) for very thin films (<15 µm) to ensure a perfectly smooth surface without micro-roughness. Use GMATT P650 (6.5-7.0 µm) for medium-to-thick films where you need maximum matting efficiency at the lowest possible cost.

How should I disperse the GMATT 600 Series?

These precipitated grades are designed for easy incorporation. Add them during the let-down stage and disperse using a standard high-speed dissolver (e.g., Cowles blade) at 1500-2000 RPM for 15-20 minutes. Grinding via bead mills should be strictly avoided as it will destroy the porous structure and eliminate the matting efficiency.
